Curriculum Overview

Curriculum at Barrowford School

At Barrowford School, we are proud to deliver the National Curriculum, ensuring a comprehensive and well-rounded education for every child. By following the National Curriculum, we provide a balanced academic foundation while fostering personal growth, creativity, and social development. Our goal is to inspire curiosity, empower confidence, and nurture children into well-rounded individuals ready to succeed in an ever-changing world.

Alongside the National Curriculum, we enhance learning with our unique educational pillars: Rounded and Grounded skills, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. These guiding principles ensure our students not only meet academic standards but also develop the skills and values needed to make a positive impact on the world.

Curriculum Content by Subject

In compliance with statutory requirements, Barrowford School publishes the content of our curriculum for each academic year across all subjects. Parents and carers can view our Year Group Long Term Plans and Subject Long Term Plans, which outline the specific learning objectives and topics covered throughout the year.

Our curriculum includes:

  • Core Subjects: English, mathematics, and science (taught in line with the National Curriculum)
  • Foundation Subjects: Art and design, computing, design and technology, geography, history, music, and physical education (PE)
  • Modern Foreign Languages: French (as part of the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2)
  • Religious Education (RE): Delivered in line with the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus. Parents may request to withdraw their child from RE lessons or activities.
  • Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE): Including citizenship and life skills to help children contribute positively to society.
  • Oracy Development: Supporting debate, discussion, and critical thinking to strengthen communication and decision-making skills.

Key Stage 1 Phonics and Reading

For Key Stage 1, we use the Essential Letters and Sounds phonics program, which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum. This program supports children in developing strong early reading skills, building a solid foundation for literacy.

Music Curriculum

Music is an important part of our curriculum and is taught in accordance with the National Curriculum.

  • Key Stage 1: The Charanga Program introduces children to fundamental musical concepts.
  • Key Stage 2: Weekly whole-class ensemble lessons, delivered by the Lancashire Music Service, encourage collaboration and skill development.
Additionally, we offer opportunities for children to experience live music, such as attending performances by the Halle Orchestra, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts. For more details, refer to our Music Development Plan.

Experiential Learning

At Barrowford School, we believe learning should extend beyond the classroom. Our students benefit from a variety of experiential learning opportunities, including educational visits, expert-led workshops, and Forest Schools sessions in our Woodland Area. These experiences connect classroom learning to real-world contexts, enhancing engagement and understanding.

Accessibility and Inclusion

We are committed to providing an inclusive curriculum that is accessible to all students. Our Accessibility Plan outlines how we ensure that every child, including those with disabilities, has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
