PE Curriculum Intent Statement

Introduction

At Barrowford School, we believe that Physical Education (PE) is a fundamental component of a well-rounded education, empowering our learners to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to lead healthy, active lifestyles. Aligned with our school’s vision of fostering respect, inclusion, and diversity, our PE curriculum celebrates the unique strengths and abilities of every child, providing opportunities for all to thrive and succeed.

Key Aims

Our PE curriculum aims to:

  • Equip learners with a broad range of physical skills, enabling them to participate confidently in a variety of sports and activities
  • Nurture a love of physical activity and an understanding of its importance for physical and mental wellbeing
  • Develop learners’ social skills, such as teamwork, communication, and leadership, through cooperative and competitive experiences
  • Foster a sense of sportsmanship, fair play, and respect for others, regardless of ability or background
  • Provide opportunities for all learners, including those with SEND, to experience success and build their self-confidence

Content and Skills

Our PE curriculum follows the National Curriculum and Lancashire Key Learning Statements, ensuring a progressive and comprehensive approach to skill development. In Key Stage 1, learners will focus on mastering fundamental movement skills, such as running, jumping, and throwing, laying the foundation for more complex sport-specific skills in Key Stage 2.

As learners progress, they will have the opportunity to apply their physical skills in a range of individual and team-based activities, including traditional sports, dance, and outdoor adventurous pursuits. Throughout their learning, they will develop an understanding of the principles of fitness, health, and safety, empowering them to make informed choices about their physical activity.

Progression

Our PE curriculum is designed to support the holistic development of each child, with a clear progression of skills and knowledge from one key stage to the next. Learners will build upon their prior experiences, consolidating and refining their physical abilities while also developing their decision-making, problem-solving, and evaluative skills.

By fostering a sense of achievement, resilience, and teamwork, we believe our PE provision will contribute to the development of well-rounded, confident individuals who are prepared to navigate the challenges of the 21st century.
