Remote Education

Ensuring Continuity in Education During Exceptional Circumstances

Attendance at school is crucial for pupils’ academic success, wellbeing, and future opportunities. Remote education, while not a substitute for in-person attendance, will be considered as a last resort when no other viable options are available. Barrowford School is committed to working collaboratively with pupils, parents, carers, and relevant stakeholders to address barriers to attendance and ensure every pupil can access education.

Remote learning may be implemented in two key scenarios: during school closures or restrictions on attendance, and in exceptional cases where an individual pupil cannot attend school but is able to continue learning remotely. For school closures, every effort will be made to maintain in-person learning, including exploring alternative sites when feasible. Remote learning will only be employed if deemed the only viable option to ensure pupils remain engaged with their education.

In individual cases, remote education will be provided on a short-term basis for pupils recovering from illnesses, surgeries, or injuries that prevent attendance but allow for continued learning. In rare circumstances, remote education may be considered for pupils with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) or mental health challenges, as part of a reintegration plan designed to support their return to school.

Delivering High-Quality Remote Education

Remote learning plans will include meaningful and ambitious content, tailored to pupils’ age, stage of development, and individual needs. This may involve live or recorded lessons and independent assignments, using secure platforms like Century Tech and SeeSaw. Barrowford School will ensure access to devices and connectivity where possible and provide printed resources if necessary. Regular feedback and interaction between pupils and teachers will be prioritized to maintain engagement and progression.

For pupils with SEND, tailored support and reasonable adjustments will be provided in collaboration with families and, where relevant, the local authority. The school remains committed to meeting statutory duties under the Children and Families Act 2014 and the Equality Act 2010.

The school will also ensure that pupils eligible for free school meals receive support through food parcels or vouchers during periods of remote education. Online safety measures, outlined in the school’s Online Safety Policy, will safeguard pupils as they engage in digital learning.

Barrowford School’s approach to remote education underscores its commitment to maintaining continuity of learning and support, ensuring every pupil remains on track even during challenging circumstances.
