Music Genres

Music of the Week at Barrowford School

At Barrowford School, we believe music is a universal language that opens minds, builds connections, and sparks creativity. Our Music of the Week initiative gives children the opportunity to explore a wide variety of musical genres from across the globe, developing both appreciation and curiosity for the sounds of different cultures.

What is Music of the Week?

Each week, a new musical genre is introduced to the children. From hip hop to rap, samba to percussion, indie to pop, folk to rock, classical to electronic — and many more — pupils experience the richness and variety of music from all around the world.

Every day, classes listen to a carefully chosen Song of the Day from the week’s playlist. After listening, children are encouraged to share their thoughts:

  • What is the song about?
  • What instruments or sounds can they hear?
  • How does the music make them feel?
  • Do they enjoy it — and why?

How Music of the Week Enriches Learning

  • Expanding Horizons: Children are introduced to genres and cultures they may not have encountered before.
  • Developing Listening Skills: Pupils learn to notice rhythm, melody, lyrics, instrumentation, and style.
  • Encouraging Expression: Sharing personal responses builds confidence and communication skills.
  • Connecting Across the Curriculum: Music links to history, geography, art, and cultural studies.
  • Celebrating Diversity: Exploring sounds from different times and places fosters respect and appreciation for other cultures.

A Lifelong Love of Music

At Barrowford, we want every child to discover the joy of music in all its forms. Through Music of the Week, pupils not only develop musical knowledge but also learn that every genre tells a story — and every culture has a unique rhythm worth listening to.

One genre at a time, we are opening children’s ears, minds, and hearts to the music of the world.
