Picture Book Assemblies at Barrowford School

At Barrowford School, we believe in the power of stories to spark imagination, foster empathy, and encourage meaningful discussions. Our Picture Book Assemblies are a unique way to bring our school community together through shared storytelling experiences.

How It Works

Each week, children participate in a Picture Book Assembly within their own classrooms. During this time, they watch a video of our headteacher, Mrs Tomlinson reading the story, creating a shared experience that is accessible and engaging for all pupils. Following the story, teachers guide thought-provoking discussions guided by a set of questions specific to the book , encouraging children to explore the book’s themes, reflect on its messages, and consider how they relate to their own experiences.

Celebration Assemblies

At the end of the week, a class shares their reflections on the picture book they explored. They present their thoughts, feelings, and the lessons they’ve learned, fostering a sense of shared understanding and celebration within the whole school community.

Linking Learning Across the Curriculum

Our picture book selections are carefully planned as part of our Cultural Capital calendar to connect with other areas of our curriculum and school calendar. These books align with themes from history, literature, and global awareness, creating meaningful, cohesive learning experiences. By integrating different disciplines, we encourage children to engage deeply, think critically, and develop a broad, empathetic perspective.

At Barrowford School, Picture Book Assemblies are more than just storytime—they are a vital part of building a connected, thoughtful, and inspired school community.
