At Barrowford School, we want to provide children with the key skills that will enable them to become lifelong learners.
We promote a love of learning through a child centred, question led, project based approach.
At Barrowford, we believe that oracy skills are fundamental to success in both learning and life. Through a carefully planned approach to debating, discussing and deliberating over ideas, our children are cognitively stretched and challenged to formulate their own opinions and come to shared decisions. This, in turn, supports the development of reading and writing skills.
All learning is underpinned by the good teaching of basic skills in maths and English where teachers ensure that each child's next steps are identified and they are challenged appropriately to make progress in line with national expectations.
Each project is led by a 'big question' and is centred around the skills and values of our Rounded and Grounded framework as well as the National Curriculum objectives. The children are immersed in the project and make discoveries whilst developing their beautifully crafted final products which they are proud to exhibit and share with all our community.
This term, our 'big questions' are:
EYFS / Year 1 - What makes me unique?
Year 2 - By 2050, there will be more plastic in the sea than fish. How can we help prevent this?
Year 3 - Are the rainforests really the lungs of the earth?
Year 4 - What made the ancient Greek civilisation so successful?
Year 5 - How did WWII make women more equal?
Year 6 - How can we help Greta Thunberg change the world?
Children use all the skills of ICT, scientific enquiry, historical questioning, geographical investigation and extend their creative development by expressing themselves through art, P.E, music, design and drama. They will also expand their knowledge of by going on educational visits and engaging with visitors and experts.
The school follows the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.
We value learning out of the classroom and our children enjoy many opportunities to develop their ideas in different environments and contexts. All our children take part in Forest Schools sessions fortnightly in our fantastic Woodland Area.
